In a world where stress seems to be woven into your everyday life, finding comfort in knitting can offer more than just a cozy blanket. From calming the mind to boosting creativity, knitting has been shown to offer many health benefits that go beyond the finished product. Let's explore eight compelling reasons why picking up those needles and yarn can be a journey towards improved well-being.
: 1. Stress reduction: The rhythmic motion of knitting can induce a calming effect, reducing stress levels. Knitting forces me to be still and encourages my body to calm down. It has really helped me through some very challenging times in my life.
2. Mindfulness: Focusing on the repetitive motions of knitting promotes mindfulness, helping to alleviate anxiety and promote relaxation. Paying attention to the project really gets my mind off of any problems I may be facing. It forces me to be present.
3. Cognitive stimulation: Knitting involves following patterns and making decisions, stimulating the brain and improving cognitive function. I usually have several projects going at the same time ranging from simple stitches to very complex patterns. I always try to challenge myself in my knitting.
4. Sense of accomplishment: Completing knitting projects provides a sense of achievement and boosts self-esteem. There is no better feeling than binding off and looking at your work! I usually send a picture to my daughter and best friend immediately. It really does feel great!
5. Social connection: Knitting can be a social activity, fostering connections with others and combating feelings of loneliness. I cannot tell you how many people I had lost touch with over the years and how knitting has brought them back into my life. It's a great conversation starter and I have found that knitters are just the most amazing people!
6. Distraction from negative thoughts: Engaging in knitting can distract from negative thoughts and worries, promoting a more positive mindset. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and it has been a super difficult time. I have no idea how I would have dealt with it if I did not have my knitting projects.
7. Therapeutic benefits: Knitting has been used therapeutically to aid in managing conditions such as depression, and chronic pain. Depression sneaks up on you, having a craft to fall back on when you are feeling lonely is a lifesaver! I also find it helps with my arthritis. Keeping my fingers moving is a key to them not becoming stiff.
8. Creative expression: Knitting allows individuals to express themselves creatively, providing an outlet for self-expression and emotional release. I love trying to create new items for my business all the time. Just seeing the joy it brings to others when I give them one of my creations or they walk by my table at a show and admire a cute item, it always brings a smile to my face.

I will attach links to knitting needles and some yarn I recommend to start off with. I personally like the chunky yarn, it just knits up quickly and my students can leave with a finished product to show off to their friends and family!
