Embarking on your knitting journey is an exciting adventure, but like any craft, having the right tools at your fingertips can make all the difference. Whether you're looking to knit a cozy scarf or an intricate sweater, having the essential beginner knitting tools is crucial for success. In this post, I reveal my top ten must-have items every aspiring knitter should have to ensure success.

For beginners, essential knitting tools include:
1. Knitting needles: It is essential to start with a pair of straight or circular needles in a size appropriate for your yarn weight. I started with straight bamboo needles because they are less slippery. You can start with bamboo circular needles if you want. They will prevent losing some of your stitches along the way.

2. Yarn: Choose a soft, medium-weight yarn in a color and texture you love. When I teach in-person classes I have medium-weight and bulky yarn because it knits up quickly. I try to have a project that you can finish in a sitting which I find is a key to ensuring beginners feel successful.
I really love the lion brand yarns for learning how to knit. Here are some links to some of my choices. https://amzn.to/49fP5Jl

3. Scissors: A pair of sharp scissors are essential for cutting yarn.

4. Tapestry needle: This essential tool is used for weaving in ends and sewing seams. I prefer metal ones. They slide through the yarn easier.

5. Stitch markers: Help mark specific points in your knitting, such as the beginning of a round or pattern repeat. These are an essential tool and super important when you are trying out new patterns and after you have mastered the knit and purl stitch. Stitch markers help to prevent mistakes and cut down on some counting as you knit.

6. Measuring tape: Essential for checking gauge and measuring finished pieces. I measure all finished pieces but mainly because I sell many of my pieces. I will confess, I do not check my gauge very often! Don't tell anyone!

7. Row counter: This essential tool keeps track of the number of rows or pattern repeats. I know people who swear by these. I write my patterns in a notebook and check off the row as I knit. I am a pen and paper kind of knitter.

8. Knitting gauge ruler: Assists in measuring gauge and identifying needle sizes. I use mine for identifying needle sizes all the time. I have a hard time finding the teeny tiny needle numbers so this tool is crucial for me.

9. Beginner knitting book or online tutorials: Resources to learn basic stitches, techniques, and patterns.I always refer to YouTube when it is a stitch I have not used in a while. This way you can watch and re-watch whenever that stitch arises in the pattern.
